MPEDA is tasked with promoting the marine products industry locally, as well as exports from the
country. It is envisaged that this organization would take actions to develop and augment the
resources required for promoting the exports of “all varieties of fishery products known
commercially as shrimp, prawn, lobster, crab, fish, shellfish, other aquatic animals or plants
or
part thereof and any other products which the authority may, by notification in the Gazette of
India, declare to be marine products for the purposes of (the) Act”. As a result of this Act,
MPEDA
is empowered to regulate the export of marine products and take all measures necessary to ensure
that seafood exports from the country are sustained and of good quality. It has the authority to
prescribe any procedures and regulations it deems necessary to protect and enhance seafood
exports
from the country in the future. Besides inspecting marine products, their raw material, and
deciding
standards, specifications, and training, it is also empowered to work on marketing the seafood
internationally. In its capacity as a nodal agency, MPEDA is responsible for the holistic
development of the seafood industry in India to realize its full export potential. As a result
of
MPEDA's recommendations, the Government of India has notified new standards for fishing vessels,
stores, processing plants, transportation, and handling of fish. Certificate of Processing Plant
